When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer in Melbourne, Florida?
One of the most common questions expecting parents ask me is, “When should I book my newborn photos?”
The short answer is: it is best to reserve your newborn photographer before your baby arrives—ideally during your second trimester. This gives you time to choose the photographer whose style you love and ensures there is space on the schedule around your due date.
However, pregnancy and life do not always go according to plan. If your baby is already here and you have not scheduled a session, please do not worry. Reach out anyway. I may still have availability, and beautiful newborn portraits can be created at many different stages.
When is the best time to book a newborn photographer?
Most families begin looking for a newborn photographer sometime during the second trimester. Booking between approximately 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy is usually a wonderful time to reserve your session.
Newborn photographers can only accept a limited number of due dates each month because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected. Reserving early helps make sure your photographer has room to adjust if your baby arrives before or after the due date.
It also gives you one less thing to think about during the final weeks of pregnancy. Your session will already be planned, and you can focus on preparing for your baby.
That said, there is no need to panic if you are further along. Even if you are close to your due date—or your baby has already arrived—it is always worth asking about availability.
How do you schedule a newborn session before the baby is born?
Because we do not know exactly when your baby will arrive, your due date is used to reserve space on the calendar rather than selecting a firm session date months in advance.
Once your baby is born, we will confirm the actual date for your newborn photography session. This allows flexibility if your baby arrives early, late or needs a little additional time before coming into the studio.
You do not need to worry about predicting the perfect date. I plan my newborn schedule with this flexibility in mind and will help guide you through the process.
What is the best age for newborn photos?
Newborn sessions are often photographed during the first two weeks after birth. During this time, many babies are naturally sleepy, curly and comfortable in the gently wrapped and posed positions associated with traditional newborn photography.
However, the ideal timing can depend on your baby, your recovery and the type of images you want.
A session may need to take place a little later if your baby arrived prematurely, required additional medical care or if your family simply needs more time to settle in at home. Older newborns may be more alert and may not stay curled or asleep as easily, but that does not mean you have missed your opportunity.
Every stage brings something special. Awake expressions, eye contact, tiny stretches and the way your baby settles into your arms can all become meaningful photographs.
The goal is not to force your baby into a particular schedule. The goal is to preserve this season exactly as it feels for your family.
What if my baby comes early or late?
This is completely normal and exactly why newborn sessions are planned around due dates.
If your baby arrives early, simply let me know when you are able. We can consider your baby’s health, adjusted age and your family’s needs when choosing the session date.
If your due date passes and your baby is still comfortable where they are, there is no need to worry about losing your session. We will wait for your baby to arrive and choose the final date afterward.
Your baby does not need to follow the calendar perfectly. Flexibility is part of newborn photography.
What if my baby is already here?
Please reach out as soon as possible. Depending on the schedule, I may be able to accommodate a newborn session even if you did not book during pregnancy.
Do not assume your baby is “too old” for beautiful newborn portraits. The session may look a little different with an older or more alert baby, but we can still capture their features, expressions and connection with your family.
These photographs are about much more than sleepy poses. They preserve how small your baby feels in your arms, the way older siblings look at them and the beginning of your family’s newest chapter.
What happens during a newborn photography session?
Newborn sessions are calm, unhurried and centered around your baby’s needs. There is time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes and snuggling whenever necessary.
I will guide you through the session, including posing, wrapping and the small details that help create beautiful, timeless portraits. Parents do not need to know what to do in front of the camera. I will help position everyone naturally and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Family and sibling portraits are also an important part of documenting this season. Even if you feel tired or unsure about being photographed shortly after delivery, I encourage you to be included. Your child will someday treasure seeing how loved they were from the very beginning.
What should we bring?
Before your session, I will help you prepare and explain what will be available. Depending on the session, this may include wraps, clothing or carefully selected pieces for your baby.
It is helpful to bring:
Extra diapers and wipes
Bottles or feeding supplies, if needed
A pacifier if your baby uses one
Extra milk or formula
A change of clothing for yourself and your baby
Any meaningful item you would like to discuss including
Try not to put pressure on yourself to bring everything imaginable. The focus will always be your baby and your family’s connection.
Should parents and siblings be included?
Absolutely. Your baby will change so quickly, but your relationship with them is just as important to preserve.
Parent portraits capture the way your newborn fits against your chest, the scale of their tiny body in your hands and the love surrounding them during their earliest days. Sibling photographs document the beginning of a relationship that will continue growing for years.
These images often become some of the most meaningful portraits from the entire session.
What matters most is not having perfectly behaved siblings or feeling completely camera-ready. I will guide your family and work with your children’s personalities and comfort levels.
Choosing a newborn photographer in Melbourne, Florida
When choosing your newborn photographer, look beyond a single beautiful image. Consider whether you connect with the photographer’s overall style and whether the experience feels like the right fit for your family.
You may want to ask:
Does the photographer have experience working with newborns?
Is the editing style consistent?
Are parents and siblings included?
Will you receive help preparing for the session?
Does the photographer offer printed artwork as well as digital images?
Do the photographs feel timeless enough to display in your home for many years?
Your newborn portraits are an investment in your family’s history. Long after the newborn stage has passed, these photographs will help you remember the details that are almost impossible to hold onto—the tiny fingers, soft hair, sleepy expressions and the way your baby once fit so perfectly in your arms.
